This is great- almost a poem. It reminds me of this:

A few minutes ago every tree was excited, bowing to the roaring storm, waving, swirling, tossing their branches in glorious enthusiasm like worship. But though to the outer ear these trees are now silent, their songs never cease.
    -John Muir
Keep close to Nature's heart... and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.
    - John Muir

I love the feeling of floating or drifting that stays with you even after you're out of the hang.

Every now and then I will slowly wake in the middle of the night to the feeling of floating above the ground. Then I will realize where I am, smile, and drift off to sleep again.

Was awakened last April in the wee hours of the morning by something poking me between the shoulder blades. Fully awake in a second! Slowly eased over the edge of the hammock and redlighted a armadillo standing directly under the head of my hammock. Not as proasic as some of the other responses but it got my attention.

While testing the hammock in the back yard, I heard an odd noise that at first sounded like two pieces of cloth or cardboard sliding past each-other, best described as a very airy "huff" sound. Lifted up the tarp to see a deer walking by, and she made the sound again (had no antlers, so I assume it was a doe). I'm a city boy, living in a small town, and while I've seen deer in my back yard before, I've never heard what kinds of sounds they make.

And while I don't take afternoon naps, I've noticed these odd, short losses of time while testing my hammock. Maybe the hardware store spiked the permetrhin with chloroform...

I've noticed that my neighbor leaves the TV/radio on at night, and I can only hear it if I'm wearing ear plugs. Yep, that's right. There's enough ambient noise if I'm not wearing ear plugs that it blends into the background. My plugs are good at blocking higher frequencies, but not as good at lower frequencies like engine noises and voices. Similarly, it's interesting when you remove your ear plugs and realize there was all kinds of noise going on, dogs in the distance, tire noise of passing cars, squirrels foraging, etc. It's an odd sensation of removing another layer of your isolation chamber.

I like the cool feeling on my back as the breeze blows on a hot humid SC evening. I also love the sound of the rain on my tarp, puts me right to sleep. The peace and solitude of being by yourself and swaying in the breeze, dreaming of days gone by.

    that swinging

I found it amazing how my brain plays back the feel of being in a hammock long afterwards.

No matter how small the swinging movement is in my hammock, even as I'm laying still, I sense it long after, even when I'm back in a regular bed going to sleep.

It's almost addictive, like I can't wait to get back to it again. I know that babies sleep better when their cradle is rocked... so who knows maybe it's hard wired into us from birth.
