    AmSteel Shrinkage

Is there a formula or rule of thumb for how much shorter my AmSteel will get when I bury an end in it?

For example, if I do a 6" bury, how much of the line I bury into will I need to completely hide the bury?

My experience has been about 5/6 shrinkage. In other words a 6" piece shrinks to 5" with a bury in it. It probably varies a bit from zing-it to 1/8" Amsteel.

Me too and I don't think it varies much. 12" bury ends up being 10"

Yes, maybe someone will post it. The shrinkage varies based on the diameter. It's not uniform.

For 7/64ths, I add 2-3 inches to the end of the bury line, and start my fid in from there. In a 6 inch bury, that would mean I started my fid at 8-9 from the splice. It is usually too much, but since it bunches up nicely, I just work the end out, take it off the fid, and milk it back in for the bury. Not scientific, but it works for me.

I think technically it's 3-1/2 fids. And a fid is 22 x the diameter of the line.

I tend not to get that technical...

The shortening of the sleeve varies with the braid, cord and size; all by no rule that works across them. I allow for more than 20%.
