Be interesting to hear their story....

Hey folks, NOOB here....thanks for all the great resources of information. Since finding HF(and Risk and JustJeff), I have DIY'ed a couple hammocks with good results, backpacked into the wilderness with my hammocks and never had a better camp sleep!

But speaking of camp sleep....I would be interested in this couple's story, and pros/cons of their hammock/tarp setup in a survival situation!

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...NINE-DAYS.html

A couple paragraphs in, it mentions tarp and hammock.

    Thanks again folks

If I ever get stranded it a snowstorm, I hope there are hot springs nearby. And a steamroom, and a jacuzzi, and a sauna.

Welcome to the forums from the Jersey Shore.

Looks like a real rough time surviving by having to share a hot spring with her.

    ...and a hammock!

The article talks about the tarp being over their sleeping hammock, not plural. I can attest to the warmth that is created by having two people in a hammock at the same time. Somewhere, there is a picture of Genuine Draft and I asleep in our Trek Light double. In the picture, there is about a foot of fresh snow all around and I'm dead-asleep with no topquilt. As a cold weather survival strategy, it sure seems valid. Your body will be well rested and you'll be warm...enough.

The hot springs seems like a gamble to me though. At some point, you have to come out of that water and after a few seconds you're going to be pretty chilled. Use something to dry off quickly and you've just soaked whatever it was you used to dry off with and now you have to figure out a way to dry it back out in cold temps with high moisture. I could see using water containers and the hot springs as makeshift hot water bags, but I don't think I'd opt for submersion in that situation. Maybe I'm wrong since they are around to tell the tale.

Sure would like to hear the story first-hand, before all the lawyers and editors get their hands on the story.

Yeah, pretty idea stranded situation if you ask me.

But if they didn't have means of water purification it could have been tricky. Either way I think the comment about the river and rain noise keeping them up was somewhat of a melodramatic edit by the author of the article. I love sleeping next to rivers because it drowns out the other random, irregular noises that I'd otherwise have to listen to. White noise ftw!

Aside from that it does sound like they were a bit light in the food department. But considering they only had to ration, instead of eating grubs to stay alive...

Then again, we have a brief article that is about as informative as you'd expect from something that length.

Hey all, thanks for the warm welcome. Haha, seems like I wasn't the only one to see this story this morning and catch the hammock part.

Yah sounds like they were in a tight spot for sure....as the title of my post said, I really would like to hear the details of the story and how they coped.....It's a small world after all, I'm sure they are on some forum somewhere....

    Thanks

    ???

Seems a little fishy to me. They seemed to be doing pretty darn good to have been out for 9 days. I think the heat in the hot springs may have been coming from friction.

I agree, 9 days is a loooong time with limited resources. Article didn't say anything about how they caught fish with their shoelaces or slaughtered a mountain goat to stay warm.....

Your post is a good reminder not to believe everything you read on the 'net!
