looking for Cheap simple plan for backyard hammock

    Hello hammock forums.

I'm thinking of making a simple hammock so I can lounge in the back yard.

I have a couple hennesy hammocks that I use for camping, but I want something I can leave out in the back yard.

Any suggestions for material to use 1.1 ripstop looks to be the cheapest, but how does this hold up to uv damage if left out long term?
Is fold and whip sufficient, or is it much better if I sew a tunnel to pass the end lines through.

$12.99 for a taffeta tablecloth plus free shipping and 10% off aint too shabby. Edges are already hemmed. Just needs whipped and some suspension.

I picked up a 60'' wide by 126'' and a 90'' wide by 132'' for the backyard for $28 shipped.

A bit heavier than ripstop, but for the backyard it shouldn't matter.

Any fabric you leave out will break down quickly because of uv... But look up gathered end hammock on here... It's prolly the easiest and cheapest way to have a hammock...

The crinkle taffeta polyester will not last in the sun too long. With that said, it doesn't take long to take down a hammock when your not using it. If you decide to go the tablecloth route (which I happen to highly recommend and love, love, love mine) and if your only ordering a couple, then wait for the free shipping, you make off with a better savings. Tableclothsfactory goes a few days with 10% of and a few days free shipping, rotating like that pretty predictably.

I have been considering the same thing. I have two trees that have the metal hooks from a previous hammock still screwed into the trunks. My thought was to do a whipped end hammock using polyester straps with loops tied (or sewn)in the tree ends as the suspension. The straps on the hammock end would not be adjustable. Once you figure out the right length for the straps, then all you have to do is put the loops over those permanent hooks and you have a consistent hang every time, and you don't have to leave the hammock out in the elements to rot or get so filthy from pollen, bird droppings, etc. that no one wants to get into it. Grab the hammock, walk out to the trees, hook each end and get in.

If you don't want hooks screwed into your trees, you could wrap the straps around the trees and use carabiners at the ends. Maybe make a subtle mark on the tree for the strap height. That may be more fiddle than you want, but that's how I would do it. I hope I didn't get off topic! I thought that might be simpler than finding special and more expensive UV resistant fabrics. My.02!

Thanks for the quick replies everyone.

I could rig up some beiners to make putting up/down a lot quicker.

Being in the PNW, we don't get a whole lot of sun anyway.

Thanks for the tips on the free shipping from tableclothfactory.

Its really easy to make a end channel hammock--------I prefer it to whipping.
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

Since it's summer time and the request is for a backyard lounger, may I suggest a Mayan hammock. I have bought a number of Mayan hammocks from Hammocks Rada over the years and have always been pleased, save once. The one exception was fixed in less than 5 days time, so I'm good with it. You can pick one up for less than $20, although I'm generally happier with the model 14s and up.
    Trust nobody!
