    Blackout fabric idea...

I went int JoAnn's today to look at batting for a diy under quilt when I came up some multilayered insulated window curtain fabric. The first layer was a canvas type fabric. The second layer was a really thin layer of batting. Next, was a layer of silver/aluminum colored sheet of mylar. The last layer was 1/8' thick piece of batting. I was wondering if this material, sandwiched between some ripstop, would offer enough insulation for winter uq. It's a little expensive ($26/yard), but I thought it might be warm and light.

Any thoughts or ideas? Also, please forgive me if this material has been discussed already. I didn't find anything by doing a search on it.

    Thanks,

    Tuck

Sounds cool... So it has two layers on insulation and one layer of canvas and one of the mylar stuff or did I misread?

The canvas layer is the bottom layer. The mylar stuff is sandwiched between the two insulation batting with the thicker of the two being the top layer. I took a pic with my cell phone (old crappy flip phone), but I'm having problems getting it to load onto my computer.

Sounds like a good under quilt based off initial description... A reflection layer an insulation layer and it all seems breathable...

I think the stuff you are looking at is called "warm window" it is heavy and compresses poorly, as I recall...
Climashield isn't all that expensive, but you will have to mail order it... a single layer of "warm and bright" or pellon insul-fleece would take you to the 50's, maybe lower...

    John,

Come to think about it, I believe you're right about the stuff's name being "warm window." I really didn't take into consideration the weight and how packable it was. When I saw it in the store, a light bulb went off in my head. Oh well... Thanks for the insight. I guess you saved me $30 or so.

My first thought was that it would be heavy. My first UQ was a sewn PLUQ and with a layer of the insul-fleece was good down to 32f.

    Hey dog,

What's PLUQ? Please forgive me for asking...I'm still sort of new here.

Dejoha has instructions for both a 'no-sew' and a 'sewn' PLUQ. Thought I had them saved but I guess not.
