Hey guys, just a quick question: I've got a babylock design pro sewing machine---bought it new 3 years ago. I've never had it serviced, but its worked really well for me. My question is......on a new style sewing machine, do you have to lubricate the bearings in the moter? I oil the machine pretty often, but its been making a whining sound lately. Just wondering if anyone else has done any mtc on their thread injector!

Your owner's manual should tell where and when to oil. Do you have your manual? If not, it may be available on the interwebs.

Always follow the manufacturers directions for oiling the machine. Some machines do not require oiling. My Viking, for example, should not be oiled as it has seal bushings which are "permanently" lubricated. All the more reason why I have a professional deal with my machine.
As far as the motor goes.... I have been warned that oiling the bushings in an electric motor can create a fire hazard as the arc from the brushes can ignite the oil. I don't know how true this is. It could be an old wive's tale. But I would avoid using an oil based lubricant on motors. I have been told graphite or a similar compound is okay to use. But I don't know.

Whining noises are typically belt related in my experience. Check the belt for wear and if the belt needs replacement I'd suggest having that done by a mechanic.

Tension is critical for proper alignment when the belt is replaced. Too tight and you can put uneven wear on the internal bushings. That will really damage the the machine and turn normal care into major repair. That's my reasoning for the mechanic to replace the belt. I seems like a really simple task. But it is very critical it be done right.
