    Yeah, what Owl said.

Ditto on what Owl said for me. I've got the original silnylon skins on my HH explorer and another set of mesh ones on my tarp. I like the mesh on the tarp as it will let at least a little of the dew stuck on my tarp evaporate during the day. Also, in a big downpour they get wet but don't fill with water so I can shake most of the moisture out in the morning before packing. These serve as my drip loops to keep water from running down my ridgeline (rigged under the tarp).

I like the sil ones to use on my hammock for exactly the opposite reason. I'll leave my hammock rigged but still in the skins if the weather turns nasty and I'm just sitting under my tarp doing dinner or some other chore. It just takes a sec to slide them back and deploy my hammock.

I'd thought about making a slug tube or something similar to bind up my hammock and UQ/TQ. I prefer to not put all my eggs in one basket though. I know this setup would really need to go into some additional layer to keep it totally dry in my pack. I pack the hammock separately from my down quilts. Hopefully if something gets wet in my pack it will be only one piece of my sleep system and not everything. I know this takes longer to setup and break down but I think the extra precaution is worth it.

I've got a lightweight dry bag I bought as a pack liner years ago. It's kind of overkill but if I had a smaller one with the vent this might be an option too. Maybe just tuck the UQ/TQ inside the hammock body and squish the whole thing into the bottom of my pack. Seal the top and squeeze out the additional air and I'm ready to go. This would save me a bit of time and headache in the woods but I'm really in no hurry. Tinkering with my gear is a good portion of the reason I hike/camp in the first place.

    Just my $.02

What size snake skins would be needed to fit the hammock and quilts?

A quick question for you guys running two sets of skins...

What are your typical hanging outings consisting of? UL backpacking? Car camping? Short hike camping? etc...

Two sets of skins just seems overkill to the UL hanger. IMO. ;-)

Depends on the hammock and quilts. I use a pair of mil-surplus poncho liners repurposed as quilts, and I have an Hennessy Explorer Ultralight. I'm not able to fit the quilts and the hammock into the stock Hennessy skins; they're too small for that. My DIY skins are 72" long by 55" circumference at the wide end, tapering to about 4" circumference at the narrow end; they overlap by a little over two feet and fit everything with room to spare.

You could probably get away with 64" long by 40" circumference at the wide end with most hammocks and quilts, maybe smaller if you've got partial-sized down underquilts; I wouldn't change the short end to any smaller, though (it would get to be hard to fit the strap through on anything smaller).

    Hope it helps!

    One man's opinion

I like skins for my fly. Makes it easier to set up and tie off and adjust position in windy conditions before unfurling, and gives me the option of leaving it in the skins until I need it for weather protection if it looks to be a nice low-risk night. For hammock I find it more convenient to just use a stuff bag.

Bike camping (usually in the 30 to 60 mile range, on road) and mid-range hiking (12 to 20 miles) when solo. Group hangs are usually car camping or short bike camps (10 to 20 miles).

I'm pretty solidly in the "lightweight" category, not ultralight. Mostly because of my price range and how hard I am on gear. I find that, at the end of a long day, I don't want to hassle with anything being more complicated than it has to be. So, the LST system is very attractive to me. And I use Velcro cable ties rather than skins on my tarp. Same idea, though.

I use mesh snakeskins for only my tarp. I really like the idea of leaving the tarp furled while I'm in camp (unless of course it's raining). I usually unfurl it just before going to bed, but occasionally I take a chance and sleep under the stars.

I am a bit careful not to let my down quilts wet so they go into dry bags and the bishop bag is super convenient for the hammock. Therefore, no slug type sack for me.

I use a silnylon python for my hammock and insulation and a mesh python for my tarp:

You can see the whole hammock system (hammock, UQ and bug net) deploy at the end of this video:

And the tarp deploy at this one:

I love the ease I have in putting my gear up and down in the woods. I keep the hammock and python inside a CF sack and the combination has kept everything dry so far.
