Hmmm, methinks its time for some extensions. I think I'll try for a setup similar to the one pictured above, just with an amsteel or dynaglide extension attached to the webbing on the pictured right. Then I'll thread the whoopie through and around to the webbing and use an MSH with branch toggles & some other branches to keep the amsteel off the tree.

Always wear a belt.

I like this idea! Gonna make a belt out of some left over webbing and get a set of rings to use as a buckle.

Personally I carry about 150 feet climbing rope (cut 2x50 and 2x25)

excells in simplicity, ease of adjustment, and ability to accommodate large trees. Sure, it is a bit heavier and bulkier than whoopies, but I love the hassle-free setup. I use 15ft straps, and have never had to add any "extenders" to them.

Is dynaglide pretty much exclusively provided in bright colors? Or are there suppliers who have something a little less conspicuous?

Run your whoopie sling loop THROUGH one loop of the strap (right side of tree below), run the strap around the tree and attach the WHOOPIE LOOP to the other end of the strap (left side of tree below) the same way you normally attach the strap loop (i.e.: marlin spike hitch, buckle as seen here, etc.) The whoopie sling makes up the distance around the tree that the strap lacks. Adjust your whoopie as usual.

Thank you thank you thank you! Hanging in the land of FAT old oaks and coastal redwoods has it's challenges, and my whoopies are extra long but I've still run into problems, but this is EXACTLY the visual I've needed. Thanks to the OP as well for fostering the thread.

hammocks are fun - and i like having to think on my feet in the woods, adapt.
tents are boring!

there are numerous ways to handle it... and i learned once, i'd rather carry an extra .oz or 2 in extra slings, extenders, straps----whatever, to ensure i can
hang my hammock at the end of a hike.
