    Hanging in the breeze . . .

or not a breeze but heavy 40-50mph winds.

Last week we were hanging in west texas when a wind storm came up and started to blow. I had a couple issues when the wind got so strong.

    1. the tarp we hung to channel the wind around us would go slack when the breeze let up, then pop back into shape with the next 40mph gust hit it, sounding like a shotgun going off in your ear.
    2. the wind would flap the edges of the hammock making an awful noise.

Anyone else experience this kind of thing when hanging in heavy winds?

The tents didn't do any better. They just got blown flat on top of anyone in them. Lots of guy lines did help hold them in shape, but it wasn't very pleasant then either.

Ended up in in the truck sleeping on the bench seat.

Do your tarp have catenary cut style or ordinary rectangular? Of course not experienced that strenght of wind but catemary hex tarp should do best job at cutting the wind from my understunding.

Catenary cuts are your friend! They keep the edges from flapping. If the whole thing is going slack between gusts, then you need shock cord on the guy lines.

I was out on a recent hang with high winds as well. Fortunately the winds stayed pretty high and the trees prevented most of the really strong stuff from beating me up. The tarp was popping so much that there was no way I was going to get any sleep so I ended up pulling the skins over it for the rest of the night. It was a little breezy but the temps were great and with no chance of rain I was good to go......actually slept great.

Now you know why the Foehn winds in Europe have been linked to higher rates of suicide.

The tarp is cat cut and didn't flap when the wind was blowing, just popped very loudly when the wind started after a slight pause. We had it strung as tight as we could get it.

The flapping came from the hammock edges. As that fabric is not taut. The flapping was unbearable. Luckily this was just an over nighter on the way back from a 3 night back country hike, so the truck was nearby.
