Could sleeping in a hammock daily for 2 months present any health risks?

    Hello all,

I am planning to on my next cycle tour across Europe. I have read mixed opinions on hammocks and the possibility of them causing back problems, but is there really any health risks associated with sleeping in this posture daily for 2 months?

    Thanks a lot,
    Rafael

I am not a doctor, but it seems to me

that sleeping in a comfortable position for a long time would MINIMIZE any health risks.

    Back Problems Fixed by Hammock

I have a damaged disc in my back since I was a teenager. About a year ago, I re-injured it and it turned out even with the treatments and drugs, it was taking a long time getting better. The only relief I would get was in the hammock. I slept in it for just about 2 months. I would literally wake up pain free. If slept in correctly, a hammock decompresses the spine. The very reason they are soooooooooooooo comfortable.

Your only worry is to find out how uncomfortable your mattress is when you get back in it.

I turned to the hammock option for camping specifically because of my back. It used to go out on me at least once a year; to the point that I couldn't walk for 3 to 4 days. Tested the hammock out in my bedroom for three days and on the third morning, it occurred to me that I was standing straight up...right out of 'bed'!

That was 2007 and my bed only existed for another month. Been sleeping in a hammock every night ever since. My back hasn't gone out on me once.

Perhaps needing to be surgically removed from the hammock? There are a lot of people on this forum who have replaced their beds with hammocks and sleep in them full time.

Been fulltime in mine for over a year now and back has never been better. Did 2 nights on a motel bed because the turtledog stand wouldn't fit in the rental two weeks ago and my back was worse. After owning over half a dozen different types of beds in 38 years of marriage IMHO a bed is worse than a hammock for your back.

I have slept in my Blackbird for 3 months and have no complaints. I echo the sentiment voiced in earlier posts. I wake up relaxed, refreshed and pain free.
A big plus is my rig is outdoors...so the birds wake me up.

Aside from the orthopedic benfits, a study mentioned a while back showed people fell asleep faster from the swaying motion.
