Changing clothes... just lower the tarp?

That is a good way to do it. You can change you pants laying in a hammock and be pretty much out of sight with a tarp over it unless someone is right on top of you. You can usually find someplace to duck behind to change tops, like your tarp or something on the edge of camp.

Or you can use a poncho and change in plain sight. When I thru hiked the AT and stayed in shelters with mixed company it wasn't unusual for someone just to ask everyone to look the other way while they changed, particularly if it was raining. Otherwise, they would just go around to the back of the shelter. You have to have a little more cooperation in the outdoors camping around other folks.

And big tarps do block more view and give you more privacy if you want to go that route.

Easiest way to change is wearing a kilt... at least for pants. I highly recommend it.

I'll give it two weeks during the next porcupine mating convention. Shriners parades are staid compared to those parties.

Not really being a hiker, I've yet to cross paths with one of these. Would it have killed them to at least put up a lattice wall?

Funny how all the photos I've seen of this type of 'out house' always seem to have them in the wide open. Makes me think many of the more modest hikers would decline to use them and find a more sheltered spot, thus reducing the effectiveness their intended goal.

In porkie territory a lattice wall would last less time than it takes to use the facility for its intended service.

You have to remember that almost any place that has a shelter and/or privy is fairly remote. At any given time there might be hiking traffic, but those people also have to deal with using the same facility. If you're alone, it's no big deal. If you're not alone, others are usually polite enough to make themselves scarce while you do your business.

The thing I didn't really like about the one I showed above is that the AT is about 20' on the other side of it, with nothing but a few blueberry bushes scattered about in between
