Why I need to set up the tarp under a cloudless sky

Tent caterpillar invasion has started. Every 6-16 years these buggers decide to make life interesting. They pretty much deforest the woods. What goes in one end comes out digested in the other end. Sounds like rain 24/7 even when it is a blue sky day, clear sky night. Ground is littered with fragments of leaves. Spotty this season. Next year should will probably be bad from NE MN through N WI into the UP. Time to stick to the piney woods and avoid the deciduous forests. Or maybe take up darts or bowling or ....

We have a version of those where I grew up, and seeing those nests and all the movement inside makes me cringe.

I cannot imagine so many that is sounds like rain.

Watch out for falling pine cones in those piney woods. Pine cone from 90ft up picks up some decent speed. I hear them dropping in my yard all the time and you can really hear the thud when it hits the ground. Would hate to be laying in my hammock and get nailed in the face by one..

Tarp is sounding like a better idea more and more. lol

I hung for 3 nights in Fort Valley, Va a couple of weeks ago under some poplar trees. On taking the tarp down it was so sticky from aphid droppings it was hard to handle. We have a similar catapillar down here in Florida and they can cause an irritation from the hairs on their bodies. Still was a great 3 nights as our season down here is over until the Fall.

Normally very deep sleeper, but a few autumns ago during the 1st season using a Spinn tarp got plunked by acorns. About flipped out of my hammock. Spinntex has a sharper sound when rain or other things hit it. So far, decent bug nets provide protection from acorns & pine cones when going tarp free. Avoid Tulle. End up Tyvek tape patches. The thought about being pooped upon all night is not appealing. Ticks, mossies & flies I can deal with. But these critters really bug me.

Sounds good to have tarp deployed also on rain free days. Also would hate to be laying in my hammock and get knocked of my nose from those pine cones.

Then there's us out West. We have plenty of cloudless days, but a tarp is still used ... for shade from the glaring sun. It is many degrees cooler under a tarp's shade than hanging in the sun.

Pine cones? Acorns? I lived in a trailer house with the poor guy next to me had a walnut tree over him. I pity him every fall when those meteors started dropping. They even woke me up with a jump when they hit his roof.
