October is good for me. What about Hoist Lakes? Not too far from I75 for the SE Michigan people. Lots of option for campsites and terrain.

I would like to get back there some day, it looks great! It would be fun to fish in the small lakes too.

Unfortunately my first time there, last May, was a nightmare. It was around May 20. After just 1/2 mile in, I was covered in ticks and bitten by mosquitoes and flies...I've never seen anything like it! I was forced to turn back and head home (what a waste of gas). When I got to the parking lot, a couple was there on a day hike and said "woah are you OK?" At first I wondered why they asked, then I saw my arms were all bloody from smashing the flies and mosquitoes. No amount of DEET was going to work. The flies were biting thru my shirt. Again, just never seen anything like it. Wrong time of year I guess.

I was stopped in construction traffic a few hours later around Flint when I noticed two ticks still crawling on my leg, and another on the inside ceiling of my Jeep...WHAT?!

Long story short, I love the area but won't be going back until Fall/Winter. Or, maybe I'll invest in some bee keeping gear I'm sure late October would be beautiful up there.

    Grayling area,,,,

A few options in the Grayling area too. It's no more out of the way than MRT. Wakeley Lake or Mason Tract are both nice trails, just North of Gaylord is Pigeon River....maybe spot some Elk. Jordan River Pathway by Mancelona is one of the best trails in Northern Lower easily.

Pigeon River would be nice option, just a little further but has nice SFCG as well as hiking & backcountry... I've not hiked there so someone with a little beta on a nice group BC site would be helpful...

There is one good site near Grass Lake, but I dont think it would be big enough for a group hang. There is a toliet seat in the woods there, so hey, its got that going for it.

We did Hoist a few years back at the end of May. Most of us had no problems but the "Tick Magnet" had a rough go of it. The palce is notroious for ticks. But for me that is no reason to leave the trail. Have you tried a Flea and Tick collar on your ankle? Was in the Boundary Waters when the first Lime Disease scare come out. Put one of those on and had ZERO problems. Though I did like sticking my head out the window on the way back.

Never tried a tick colar, but I should have had my pants tucked in anyways. I was so bitten up after a couple hundred yards it wasn't even bareable so I wasn't paying attention to ticks at the time.
