and a 10 inch continuous loop larksheaded to the gathered end can have a dutch whoopie hook on it....and as MAD777 points out depending on situation you dont have to use it but most of the time you will.

They add little overall weight to your system and help with the bit fat trees.
If you carry slings you'll figure out many uses for them.
