To Cat-Cut, Or Not To Cat-Cut! This Is My Question.

I just got my DIY Hammock supplies from Backwoods Daydreamer, and I am seeking information. It will be a gathered end hammock approx. 11' long and about 60" wide. I have read and seen on Youtube that to be able to see out of your hammock you should Cat-Cut the sides.

What is a good depth to Cat-Cut?

I also what is the best method to ease the calf pressure problem?

    Any help/advise would be appreciated.

It's not really necessary to cat cut a hammock. Even if you did, there still wouldn't be a 360 view. None of my hammocks have cat cuts and visibility has never been an issue. If you add Knotty's stretch side mod, that helps with side flop.

+1 on what Detail Man said and using Knotty's instructions.

More can go wrong trying the cat cut on the hammock than will go right. If you are going to attach the bug net to the hammock the cat cut works better due to the netting keeping the hammock shaped up.

I agree on no cat cut, but I am curious about what you have seen. Got Links?

I was kinda going for something very similar, modeled from Wilderness Logics Snipe Hammock.

Yea, I do Have a link. It is from a fellow forums member, CreativeKayt.

I have decided to just go for it. Meaning hem up the sides and ends and gather, no Cat-Cut. Since it don't make a difference, it's not worth the complacations that would come with it.

I thought the Cat Cut was to reduce noise of "flapping" in the wind, and shaving a ounce.

    am I wrong?
There was an Old Man with a owl,
    Who continued to bother and howl;
He sat on a rail, And imbibed bitter ale,
Which refreshed that Old Man and his owl

On a tarp, yes. But it looks like Kayt used it on her hammock to open up the sides/view a bit. I'm not sure if there is a real benefit to this vs. having a narrower hammock to start with??? Time to hang and ponder I suppose.

Rather than a cat cut I put channels down the full length of my hammock and put bungee in there..... a stretch side hammock, cuts down on the floppyness and keeps stuff in the hammock better (if you don't have an integrated bug net).

See Tendertoe's video for a better idea of what I'm talking about. I think I executed my slightly different, but have the same basic results. I'm love'n the full stretch side effect.
