    Two Nights at Echo Lake

Hey everyone! Last month my buddy Matt and I went on a two night trip up to Echo Lake in the Catskills. The shelter location was beat up and dirty thanks to some seriously irresponsible campers. They left several sleeping bags, many cooking pots, a queen size pillow (no joke), and some other odds and ends.

The chipmunks were "aggressive" in the sense that they came much closer than I would expect, no doubt due to people feeding them. They really wanted to get at our food. They even succeeded when Matt left his banana chips in the shelter on our day hike up to the summit and ruins. Every chip was gone! Whoops. Matt learned his lesson though. He really loves his banana chips!

Love Echo Lake! Gets really cold there in the winter time as all that cold air drops right into that spot. Russ and I stayed there on New Years Eve and you could hear the creeking of the ice all night long.

It was trashed with the sleeping bags and cook gear when I was there in Feb, for our winter backpack trip. It got down to 5 degrees there the night we were there. Man does that lake make some crazy noises, all night!
I like refried beans. That's why I wanna try fried beans, because maybe they're just as good and we're just wasting time. You don't have to fry them again after all.

After hearing about all these weird noises, I really want to check the lake out in the winter!

We ran into a DEC intern and he told us that even though there was plenty of trash still left at the lean-to, they had already carried out trash in excess of 100 pounds. That just goes to show you the LNT ethics of some campers.

I'm not a die-hard LNT guy, but "Carry it in/Carry it out" is pretty basic stuff.
