Thumbs up Old School Hanger (1973)

    Hi All,

I've been hanging since 1973 when I found a small softball sized nylon hammock at a surplus store for about $5. I always wanted a better place to sit and that seemed like the right solution. I spent the night sleeping in the hammock that summer and have never hit the trail without it since... actually, I still have the original... can't find them like this anymore (actually found this forum while looking) and this one hasn't worn out yet! Weighs exactly 7 oz including the steel rings and paracord hang straps I added.

I drop my 3/4 lightweight thermarest into the bottom, drape my down bag over and run a ridge line for my 7x9 tarp when the weather is iffy. I keep thinking about a mosquito net addition but never commit

I've even hung the hammock from a single tree using my staff as the other support -- it works, though the geometry is hard to understand.

OK, that's enough for now... it's cool to find a forum like this... can't wait to check it out.

    Cheers,
    WoodRat

Woodrat you've been hanging longer than most here have been around! Welcome aboard from Florida. Been around awhile myself just haven't been hanging but a year or so.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

Welcome from Florida. I envy you - I've been backpacking since the '60s but didn't have sense enough to use a hammock until a few years ago.

Welcome to the place where complex hammock geometry will be best appreciated.

WoodRat has true grit! I also have one of those hammocks, and even slept in it one night many years ago because I just could not make myself lay down on that shelter floor. Strung way too tight, no sag, little comfort, but I wasn't on that floor. Welcome to HF form Ga.

Welcome from Southern Indiana WoodRat...sounds to me like you have something to offer us of which we all seek different ways to hang and you may just have a perfect 1 tree solution. Please elaborate more for us as we all seek perfection in our hangs. Nice to have you in the forum.
