    Mosquito protection from underside

Hammock camping in MD May thru Oct, HH explorer UL and Safari, and UL backpacker.
My UQs are ~ 3/4 "summer quilts, they run from my thighs to my neck.
That leaves my head and feet vulnerable through the single layer hammock.

Whats my best approach? make full lenth summer UQs ?
will treating with permith do the trick?

    Thanks,
    Slack

Permethrin treatment has kept me bug free on my HH explorer UL and my kids expedition. I forgot to treat his before our first trip and the side of his face and one arm were riddled with bites by morning. I was hanging 4 feet away and not a bite on me. The stuff works.

Another option is something like a 2QZQ UQ protector. It's just a loose fitting 2nd layer of fabric. That will keep the bugs away, the dew off your quilt, and probably adds a few degrees of temp rating as it blocks most of the wind.

    good luck

I like the concept, 6.5oz though?
Does Cuben breathe enough to use for that function?

    Permethrin.
It is your friend for hot weather hanging. Adding extra layers will only make the hammock warmer.

+1 on permethrin. Really works. I also had good luck wuth Cutter mosquito repellent. I didnt have time to pre-treat with permethrin so i used good ol bug spray. Not a bite.

    Thanks guys,
I have a spray jug filled with farm grade permith cut to .5%.
I was not sure it would "repell", I knew it would kill after a while, but thought maybe they would have enough time to bite.
    Glad to know it works.

There may be better insecticides for mozzies than permethern

This is not the only research challenging the efficacy and durability of permethrin when applied to fabrics. And this was over 15 years ago.

Other pyrethroids, including some mentioned here, are the dominant ingredients in Raid and similar products.

Comparison of different insecticides and fabrics for anti-mosquito bednets and curtains.

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U.K.
    Abstract

Various formulations of six insecticides (a carbamate and five pyrethroids), were impregnated into bednets and curtains made from cotton, polyester, polyethylene or polypropylene fabric. For bioassays of insecticidal efficacy, female Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes were made to walk on the fabrics for 3 min and mortality was scored after 24 h. The main concentrations tested were: bendiocarb 400 mg/m2, cyfluthrin 30-50 mg/m2, deltamethrin 15-25 mg/m2, etofenprox 200 mg/m2, lambda-cyhalothrin 5-15 mg/m2 and permethrin 200-500 mg/m2. Field trials in Tanzania used experimental huts (fitted with verandah traps) entered by wild free-flying Anopheles gambiae, An.funestus and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes. Results of testing the impregnated fabrics in experimental huts showed better personal protection provided by bednets than by curtains. Permethrin cis:trans isomer ratios 25:75 and 40:60 were equally effective, and the permethrin rate of 200 mg/m2 performed as well as 500 mg/m2. Bioassay data emphasized the prolonged insecticidal efficacy of lambda-cyhalothrin deposits, except on polyethylene netting. Most of the impregnated nets (including the 'Olyset' net with permethrin incorporated during manufacture of the polyethylene fibre) and an untreated intact net performed well in preventing both Anopheles and Culex mosquitoes from feeding on people using them overnight in the experimental huts. Anopheles showed high mortality rates in response to pyrethroid-treated nets, but only bendiocarb treated curtains killed many Culex. Holed nets treated with either cyfluthrin (5 EW formulation applied at the rate of 50 mg a.i./m2) or lambda-cyhalothrin (2.5 CS formulation at 10 mg a.i./m2) performed well after 15 months of domestic use. Treatment with deltamethrin SC or lambda-cyhalothrin CS at the very low rate of 3 mg/m2 gave good results, including after washing and re-treatment.

I've gotta say, I really love this place! I was considering posting this exact question. Thanks Slackdaddy! and, BTW, hello fellow Marylander!

Edit: I am a chowderhead... Was intending to post this in the other threat about bug nets or not.
Sorry! I still appreciate the info though. End edit.

I'm getting ready for Boy Scout camp in a couple weeks where I know it will be hot and buggy. Was concerned about bugs. From some previous threads, I learned about the Sawyer permethrin treatments (will give it a shot to see how it works...I personally don't like DEET based bug sprays...stinks and stains, but it's better than getting munched). I was really wondering about the benefits of getting a hammock with an integrated bug net vs. adding a separate bug bag to my existing hammock. Think I'll stick to a separate bug bag plus spray pre-treatment for now and see how things go.
