Considering a second underquilt for 3 season camping, am I crazy?

I already own a 0 degree Incubator with overfill which I completely failed to use properly my first time out. I'm becoming a more educated hammock camper and in doing so, I learned that even in summer (when the temperature can drop below 60 degrees at night) I need some insulation.

I'm considering a Kifaru woobie as a piece of lightweight insulation and I'm also considering buying a 40 degree Incubator.

Assuming I've saved my pennies to buy a second underquilt, would I be crazy for buying a second underquilt for 3 season camping?

I'm weight conscious but not to the point of being extreme about it. Oh wise hammock campers, can you help a newbie out?

Not at all. I have 3 season and winter quilts. I actually wish I had summer quilts.

Nope you won't be crazy for an extra quilt, not with all the gear junks on here

Currently using a PLUQ, besides my JRB Nov Sniveler, but MacEntyre is making me a Baby Orca which I want to give a good run for the temps (testing myself out too).

I'd wait and practice with the UQ you have, so you get really good at adjusting it for various nighttime temperatures. This is not just to get the skill you need to vent it on a hot night and tighten it up again near dawn as the temperature drops - it's also to make sure you can get maximum warmth from it when it's really cold, which is much more important IMO.

Then, you could do the math. How much weight would you save by using a lighter underquilt? How many dollars per ounce of weight saved?

Part of regulating warmth is layering. What do you wear to sleep? How much can you extend the range of your winter UQ by wearing silk long johns, socks, etc.? What if you applied those layers to warm-weather sleeping, by themselves or with a really minimal UQ or sock? The better you understand the equipment you have, the easier it will be to make smart decisions about what to supplement or replace it with. Just knowing for sure what works for you will give you a warm glow.

Well said WV! I agree with you wholeheartily. Only when you tinker around and constantly adjust your gear, and really get to know it, can you make an honest judgement on what you really need as far as your next purchase.

You could always use a light pad and if you ever camp below 0F you can use it to supplement your UQ. It wouldn't even need to to be a pad per se but something like a car window reflector or a piece of that silver bubble wrap insulation.
