    What does this mean?

    From the website:
    "¾ urethane coating for water-proofness"

Does that mean that only part of the tarp is "water-proof"?

Hard to believe that a 10X12 tarp made with heavier material (1.9 ripstop vs. 1.4 sil), plus the urethane coating, plus the brass grommets every 3' is an even 16 oz. Pretty inexpensive too!
    Trust nobody!

I saw this and thought to meself "Wow! $55 for a Great Big silnylon tarp", although I knew at the back of my mind that the SWT and JRB 10'x11' are smaller in dimension and a little over a pound.

I followed the link and see that the tarp is coated 1.9 oz/sq yd nylon. So I know from experience that coated 1.9 nylon works out to be at least 2.2 oz / sq yd.

Now if this tarp is truly 10' x 12', that makes 17,280 sq inches, which is 13 1/3 square yards. Don't even have to multiply it out to see that 1 lb even isn't happening. Even if the coating was weightless this tarp would weigh at least 25 1/3 oz for the fabric alone, at least if it is rectangular, which seems to be the case.

Not to say that this isn't a fair price for a good tarp. Just that according to the published specs, I think you're looking at a tarp that is closer to 2 lbs than to 1 lb.

My guess is that they took the weight of the smallest Equinox tarp; which is 5x7. That would work out to be about 9 ounces before grommets, hems, thread, etc.

FWIW I would personally try to avoid any tarp that uses grommets in place of properly reinforced tie outs. Grommets significantly weaken the frabic and especially on a large tarp are going to be much more prone to failure in a strong wind. You can of course sew on your own ties outs and use them instead of the grommets.

Regardless, that is really an excellent price for a large tarp. Good find!

    too late!

They're already atarted...we just let them prove it by doing math in public...
