That is an incredible story, you are indeed lucky to be alive. It's good to hear that your son seems unfazed by it. If nothing else, this event will give him some added respect for mother nature.

Heckuva story - glad you are all okay. As I remember, they have some pretty huge old-growth trees in GSMNP, so it wasn't just 30 ft. saplings coming down.

I understand your daughter's feelings. My son is an expert snowboarder, but he caught an edge, hit a tree, and rolled down a 70 ft. cliff when we were spring skiing one year. He was really bruised up, but nothing major.

That was eight years ago, and he hasn't gone spring skiing since, and swears he will never go for the rest of his life. He goes down black diamond/double black diamond expert slopes, which is dangerous as heck, but he thinks it's safe as long as it's not in the spring. Go figure -fear isn't always rational.

I'm drawn to the open country. Its where the world makes the most sense. When I put myself out there I always return with something new.

What no pictures? Can't believe you wasted your time helping emergency services and rescuing the injured instead of taking the time to snap a few photos.

Just now saw this post. My daughter and I were in the same storm. We were at the end of the Little River Trail. About 7 miles in. Hit all of a sudden. Trees were bending way over and then we started hearing them crack and fall. Rain poured down. We were set up near a creek and decided to wait for the water to go down. Storm was over in less than an hour but rain continued (Not as hard). We had a flow of water going under our hammocks. We saw many trees down the next day.

WOW. I just read your post. I'm so happy you guys are okay. I'm very grateful for that. We may need to meet up sometime for a hang up there!
