Call the gentleman in the letter that Pips linked for you and see if you can convince him to get them to plant some 6x6 posts. Those grow everywhere

Believe between Throkda, old4hats and hppyfngy that's a fairly complete materials list. There is alot of leeway in choice of hardware and lumber and when it's broken down to the basics the only difference in The Turtlelady and The Turtledog is in replacing the lashing with hinges and bolts. You may want to also check out the angled ends used by hppyfngy as they help in positioning the legs.

old4hats, I'm a little courious about the numbers also.

I have a question in regards to this... I am just over 300lbs, will 2x2's support my weight?

You can also coat the ends, (cut-exposed} area with candle wax after they have dried a while and it should stop them from cracking on the ends, not that that usually hurts anything. make them a little longer than needed and after drying a while, cut off a couple of inches to get to clean uncracked wood before coating. this does well on hiking staffs also.

I work with a girl who's (supposedly) friends with one of the rangers over there. Let me talk to her and see what I can find out; they may be amenable to a compromise using some of the structures over there. She supposedly hung somewhere in the vicinity of that park once...

I had my wife and myself in mine with a combined weight of about 320 and it held with little deflection in the poles, but I wouldn't trust it for long. I would go with something more substantial, at least a 2x3.

I made a fold flat stand out of 2x4s and they bow considerably, however all my weight is essentially being held by 2 2x4s with a single support...

    Here's one materials list.

    • 6 - 8'x2"x2" cut down to about 6 feet
    • 2 - Gate hinges (I picked one that looked like the size that made sense)
    • 8 - 1/4"x2.5" bolts with nuts and washers
    • 2 - small stainless steel shackles
    • about 10' of some kind of metal pipe type stuff that has one end smaller to fit inside another piece, cut into two pieces
    • some spare rope
    • a couple of biners (these are sort of temporary until I figure out how I want to attache my hammock to the stand

    Close pics later (maybe tomorrow)
