My large tarp has storm doors that I'd like roll and hold back during nice weather. Today I made a set of 8 'gear ties'. It's really easy and fast to do.
At the dollar store Dollarama I found "Schmidt Rubber Coated Flex Tie". One pack is 16 feet for $1.25 I think it's coated with a silicon rubber, and is grippy enough for the tie to stay put. A pack of wire would probably make two dozen ties. You can buy the actual "Gear Tie" retail product for slightly more than $1 per tie.
I clipped off an 8 inch section of wire and with small needle nosed pliers I rolled over the end a few times. This is to cover and hide the sharp end of the wire.
Then I bent it in half and twisted the pair. The finished gear tie is slightly shorter than 4 inches long. (But I think shorter would work fine.) A set of 4 of them weigh about 0.4 oz / 11g
