    Whoopie Sling Length??

    Hey all,

I am in the process of switching from my tent to a hammock and have a few questions about the whoopie sling length. I plan on using webbing with the marlin spike hitch to attach to the tree. How long do I need to make my whoopie sling to go from the spike to my hammock? Also how long will the total piece of amsteel need to be?

I have watched several different videos on how to make the whoopie slings and feel comfortable with making it as soon as my stuff gets here next week but none of the reading or videos I have watched mention anything about the total lengths.

Thanks in advance for any help and love the forums so far! I have learned a ton.

    Try this link: http://hammocker.com/whoopie-sling
It has options for you to choose what size amsteel you are using, what size fixed loop you want and overall length of the whoopie. Once you put in the options you want the tutorial will give you the exact length of rope to cut and where to start your splices etc...
I went with the default options and everything worked great.

I've been researching the same question. It would be nice to hear a consensus on a good all-around Whoopie Sling length. From what I've gathered, so far, about 6 feet is about right. This requires about 14-15' of line to begin with. A minor shortening occurs (maybe an inch or two) by the adjustable bury (the line shortens when it is expanded to encompass the other part. Another foot or so is used to double back to form the eye and eye splice a (4" long eye seems typical). A few more inches is required to back splice the end of the adjustable bury.

For what is is worth, we sell two 6 footers to ever one 8 footer. I carry 6 foot ones myself and they work well in the areas I travel. On old growth tree that are further apart, I'd probably go with 8 foot ones.

Here's in my opinion, the best video on making WSs:

    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...ad.php?t=70189

That one gives lengths for the overall whoopie and all its individual parts.

I made 2 8' whoopie slings, and so seldom (read never) used the entire length I shortened them to 6'.

    Re: Whoopie Sling Length??

I made mine about 7 ft long and they have worked out great. Sometimes wish they were shorter but it is worth it when you have to hang in between some trees that are farther apart. Remember to double your length you want the end product to be and then some. Otherwise they will come out shorter.
