Since I was 12 years old, I have always had a nylon rope hammock on the porch, the deck, or the backyard. But it wasn't till two years ago that I found out that people camp in hammocks. That's how I arrived here at HF. After considerable research and still overwhelmed, I bit the bullet on a HH Asym Zip. It got me off the ground and I still use it, though I've since added another four hammocks to my arsenal, and am about to DIY another couple.

Early 90's, Wal-Mart nylon string hammock, wadded up , just bigger than a baseball, not nearly long enough, rough on the skin, and even so, I loved to rest in it while on the hiking trail, even slept, well tried to sleep, in it one night tied up to an AT shelter. Fast forward several years to my Clark NX 250, which I love, and a couple of table cloth DIY's which are very nice as well.

My first hammock was May of 70...in Vietnam,,in a peasant village of my assigned AO in the bush..it was a home made hammock that the peasant in that hooch (house if you want to call it) had woven together out of bamboo strips they had cut and peeled off bamboo..at each end was 1" dia piece of bamboo about 4 ft long that it was all tied together about 4' x 6' long,,and it could hold 2-3 people at one time sleeping together it was so strong,,had no holes between the bamboo strips as it was woven like you would weave a basket..man,,did I sleep good in that hammock! Even when it was hot,,I slept good as alot of the peasants had them,,as it kept them off the dirt floor of the hooch,,away from vipers, snakes, and rats. Or the pigs, chickens, and ducks also..even tho they continually swept the dirt floors with a bamboo broom. 2 yrs ago,,found this forum,,and first bought hammock was GT Standard single,,no bug net or anything,,just the hammock,,and froze my butt off in it till I started reading this forum and learning about everything it took to hammock hang.

With the large hex tarp it seemed like a good value. And, after three years, I still like it, but not the bottom entry. I use a Deep Jungle now. But, I'm always thinking about a trying a different one. I'm currently seeking an ultralight for extended backpacking...

I jumped for the WBBB first. I haven't needed another for myself so far, but I'm considering switching to a WB Traveller with a PapaSmurf Noseeum Bug Sock. I might miss the shelf, but being able to remove the net entirely is something I'm really wanting to try.
