    Headed to Melrose, MT - any tips?

    I have been invited by some family to spend a week in Melrose, Montana - just a little south of Butte. I'll be there the week of Labor Day, and I hope to get out for an overnighter or two.

    I've never been to the area before, so I'm looking for places to go. One place I've heard about is Torrey Lake; however, ~8 miles each way makes it a bit more than I'd like to hike.

    Can anyone recommend places in the area to hike in for a night?

    I'd have a lot more suggestions if you were a bit further east in my stomping grounds around Bozeman or Billings. But...

    You'll be right in the area of the Beaverhead National Forest, the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness, the Big Hole river (if you fly fish), and a few other cool places.

    The Humbug Spires is pretty close to there, as are Torrey Lake (as you mentioned) and Grayling Lake. I can't say I've done any of them, so I'd suggest a good Googling to see which would be up your alley.

    From all I've seen/heard, Humbug seems like it'd be a good one. It's 9 miles total.

    Be sure to get a pork chop sandwich in Butte.

    I'm flying into Bozeman and swinging by REI for a few things before heading west.

    My uncle is all about fly fishing - he suggested getting a guide and drift boat for a day and going on Big Hole. We'll see how things play out - I've only ever done bass fishing, so it would be an interesting new experience.

    Beaverhead was the obvious place, as I'll be almost next door to it.

    And now you have me curious (and a little hungry) for pork chop sandwiches. I assume it's a local thing?

    Legend has it that the Wop Chop Pork Chop sandwich at the Freeway was Evel Kneivel's favorite sandwich, but the pork chop sandwich has long been associated with Butte. There used to be "Pork Chop John's" restaurants in lots of other Montana towns. My favorite used to be the pork chop with a fried egg on top. Can't be good for you, but it tastes good.

    You have to at least attempt some fly fishing while you are in Montana! There are lots of good guides and outfitters, especially in Bozeman.

    If you need restaurant or recreational ideas in that area, let me know! That's my wheelhouse.

    Butte = Front Street Market
    Italian heaven in MT.

    The Big Hole is a must. If you can operate a cane pole, you can fly fish.
