    tension on ridgeline

I have a HH zip. On this hammock, or just in general, how taut should I make it when I tie it off to the webbing? Meaning how much should the hammock sag or how tight should it be...which also affects the tension on the ridgeline as well. Is it just a preference thing meaning whatever is most comfortable for you?

Hammocks that have a ridgeline should be hung such that the ridgeline is straight, but there should be no additional tension on it.

Yes, that is a good description.

Here is a good video showing about how your hammock RL should be set. Granted, the video is for a WBBB, but it works well for most hammocks.

The RL portion is at about the 5:00 mark.

ah - i remember watching this now - i didn't entirely understand until i started seeing how the tension could be adjusted by pulling the hammock taught which tightens the ridgeline - i'm new ya know

    thanks

There have been ridge line failures on Hennessy hammocks when people pull them too taut. They are structural, but not necessarily load bearing.

+1 on how others describe the tension setting.

Newbie here with first post. After watching the video and reading Derek's book, I'm still confused. I have a Hennessy Expedition side zip I bought today that I'm hopeful will provide me with good sleep during a 7 day BCWA trip. I went back out and adjusted the angle but when I lay in the hammock the ridge line is unflexible or only slightly so. Should the Hennessy be able to flex as much as the Blackbird? Should I increase the angle. As an aside when I sit in the hammock in a chair position the ridgeline hits me in the back of the neck, is this normal also.

Thanks in advance for the help, I'll happily wander up and post an intro now!

im new to this site but not new to hammocks. im not saying i know it all, because i definitely dont. but i have a hh ultra lite and all u need to do is just make it tight enough but not to tight. im about 160 and i tie it tight, not guitar string tight, but tight. Dont spend too much time worring about your RL. There is a learnig curve with hammocks. u should first spend a couple of nights in it in your backyard, just gettin in your sleeping bag is a challenge and god forbid u need to go in the middle of a cold night. just play around with it and youll figure it out. anything youve got questions about: YOUTUBE.

oh yeah and the RL is extremely annoying about hitting u in the neck. its at the perfect level to suck really bad for chair use. ive been thinking about cutting it and tying carabiners to it just for that reason. anyone got any advice.
