    Indian Peaks make-up hike

During the Colorado Summer Hang this year everyone that wanted to do this hike had unforeseen circumstances arise, so had to bail and the hike didn't happen. So I'm proposing a make-up hike.

I've got lots of interest from those at camp last weekend. I would like to do it as originally planned by **** (food). 3 nights, hike out on day 4. Night 1 at Red Deer Lake, camp/fish. Night 2, after hiking over Buchanan Pass, camp near the Gourd Lake TH. Night 3, Pawnee Lake camp/fish. Day 4, hike over Pawnee Pass and back to our starting point. Average daily mileage will be around 6.5 miles per day.

I've had a request from Ed(slowanderer) for the last weekend of July, that would be the 27-30. Those are the same dates food had planned for his own hike on his original 2012 calendar.

****, does the Forest Service limit the number of people "per day" to seven or just group sizes to seven? We may get people wanting to go, but being able to get a permit will be the limiting factor.

As **** originally planned, we'll need to limit people for this hike to 7, unless we have more wanting to come, then another group of 7 will need to form and get another permit. From what I understand, that's how it works.

    CURRENT ATTENDANCE LIST:

    Myself(Trailryder42)
    Ed(Slowanderer)

The maximum group size is 12 and there is one permit per night per backcountry zone issued for a group. There are two permits per night per zone issued to parties of up to seven people. One person counts as a party. There could be as many as 26 heartbeats overnight in a zone. Dogs and packstock count in the allowed number.

They do not allow an organization (think Boy Scouts) to have more than one group or party per night per zone.

    Does that make sense?

I think I can be there for the 27 to 30, but it is not certain.

Hey, where is everyone who should be jumping on this opportunity. Wonderful scenery, nice weather, plenty of water, trout to catch, and great folks to hike beside. With only 7 slots per permit, thought it would be booked-up by now... TZQ

I am amending the dates to the 26-29 of July. These dates work for the 3 of us that are currently interested.

If this thing happens, I sure hope you can make it Taozenqi.

Thanks tr42. You know I would like to make it as well, but it's not looking good as there hasn't been much change in the situation here. I'm starting to wonder if my annual Quetico trip in August is also in jeopardy.
P.S. - Enjoyed your trip report of the Colorado rainfest. - TZQ

Food has the permit in hand. It's for a group of 7, so there are slots for 4 more at this time.

Since everyone besides me lives close, I'm having thoughts of coming up on Wens the 25th and staying at the Sundance Lodge outside Nederland. Then we could meet up there Thursday morn for breakfast and head out afterwards.

    But I'm open to suggestions.

    does size matter?

Will my 8" skillet (5.7 oz.) be big enough?

I am thinking 4 oz. of oil?

The perfet frying stove would be a vintage Svea123.

I'm thinking any trout we catch won't be over 10-11" so I bet you could make an 8" pan work.

I guess the fire ban is still lifted, meaning we can now use our alcohol stoves like the Caldera Cone???

It's also been suggested that there should be plenty of walk in sites at Kelly Dahl for Wenedsday and that we meet up there. For me that would be a cheaper alternative than the $100 bill I'd drop staying at the Sundance and it,s not that long of a drive to the trailhead.

I am still hoping for trout cooked on the coals, wrapped in foil with lemon slices and an onion slice inside!
The svea 123 will be transported in the box and packed as needed.

Really looking forward to this hike!!

So what time is departure from Kelly Dahl thursday morning? I will meet you guys there or the trail head, or somewhere along the way, which ever you prefer.
Also, this is a bump. Time is short. Hope more people are able to attend.
