Sleeping bag recommendation?

First post to these boards so apologies if this is a repeatedly asked question.

My son (17, 6’, 155lbs) uses a Hennessey Ultralight Asym and prefers it over any tent. I’d like to upgrade his sleeping bag for the spring and fall shoulder seasons (he doesn’t yet winter camp and has a lightweight summer bag).

I’m looking for something relatively lightweight and compact that will work with kayak camping space restrictions, but I’m a tent camper and haven’t a clue about what might be preferable in a sleeping bag for a hammock.

He prefers not to use a pad and I’m guessing down might compress too much for bottom insulation. Are there are bag designs/materials that work better in conjunction with a hammock.

Any recommendations or suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome to HF!!

Most of us use some kind of quilt - check out www.jacksrbetter.com, www.speerhammocks.com, www.nanutakusa.com, www.fanaticfringe.com. If he doesn't want to use a pad, check out the underquilts at the first two addresses. Steep, but you get what you pay for...you don't see many underquilts being resold for a reason.

If you really want to stick to a bag, center zip is great for a hammock...but other folks are happy with regular bags. Left-zip seems to work better in a Hennessy b/c of how the asym is.

Maybe check out Big Agnes, too - a bit heavier, and less expensive, than other bags...but most BA users seems to be very satisfied as well.

If he doesn't like to sleep on a pad you could check out a HH super shelter or the JRB Nest. The nest is much better but more $$$. The Nest fits under the hammock so it doesn't compress.

I had kinda thought to look through ghe Big Agnes bags in any case. We have been very satisfied with all of te Big Agnes products we have purchased so far.

I wonder if BA offers a center zip bag?

welcome to hammock forums,before i started using quilts,i just used sleeping bags as a quilt that had a 3/4 or full lenght zipper.i hav2 quilts from jacksrbetter http://www.jacksrbetter.com/

here is a bag that works well for 3 season hammocking,i even sent sgt rock one a couple years ago for christmas while he was in iraq.

I'll second the Big Agnes suggestion. Keeps the pad where it belongs, gives decadent comfort, also works well on ground with cushy insulated air mattress.
