    night time gear storage?

So what do you guys do with your unused gear and pack overnight? I've tried hanging my pack from the ring or line at the gathered end, but this seems a bit awkward, and it can catch some rain. The ground may be wet/muddy and hanging from the tree is wet or attracts ants. I don't want to carry a half pound under-belly. Any ideas?

Underbelly- are you referring to a gear hammock, perhaps this one that is also a pack cover?

I suppose if half a pound is an odious amount of weight, I guess it could be argued that you're carrying too much stuff, if you have to store it somewhere. :P (I'm just teasing!)

Some people use their pack under their legs as extra insulation.
my hammock gear weights total: 2430g (~86oz)
    Winter: total 2521 (~89oz)

I've just been hanging my gear up on one of the trees that I hang from, but you're right--there is potential there for problems. Many people have a smaller gear hammock that they hang under them. I like that idea because it keeps you gear off the ground, under your tarp, and if your hammock fails you, you have something to help absorb your fall (provided you aren't toting around broken bottles, bayonets, and bits of rusty razor blades ). In fact, I seem to recall a thread wherein someone made a pack cover out of tyvek that doubles as a gear hammock. I'll dig around and see if I can't find that thread. Hope this helps.
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

Sorry, I hadn't made the connection that a gear hammock was the half pound underbelly you alluded to. You could ditch the gear hammock idea and hang just your pack beneath you--for weight, it would only cost you a little cordage (which is always nice to have in a pinch anyhow). Perhaps if you carry a poncho you could modify it to serve as a gear hammock as well.

I simply pack everything into my pack liner and set it right underneath me. Has worked fine so far!

In fair weather I hang my pack from a line strung between a couple of trees. In wet weather its under me on top of its pack cover.

Mine goes under my hammock on top of my shoes (to help keep slugs out of my footwear (yeach!). The pack is mostly empty by then.

Mine goes under my hammock on the ground on its rain cover with my boots on top. That makes my boots easy to get if I have to get up in the middle of the night,
