I have been thinking about tarps all day at work. The best idea I have come up with is buying 2 of the $10 walmart 5X7 "ultralight backpacker tarps" and sewing them together to make a 10X7 tarp. Any thoughts on this? And what about putting a ridge line in the seam while Im at it?

Personally I find 7' tarp to be too narrow for consistently reliable coverage. 10' length is a little short as well for me. but HYOH and YMMV.
The polypropylene tarps have distinct disadvantages depending on what you are doing. They are heavy, bulky and noisy. If those are not issues then consider the issue of sewing them together and sealing them to be waterproof. Those polypro tarps do not sew down to nice smooth flat-felled seams. It could be quite challenging to get them properly sealed.
Before I took the route you mentioned I would hang the hammock with one of those 7 x 5 tarps pitched as an assym diamond tarp. Your ridge would be longer and you might end up with the more side coverage. Just my thoughts.

I've seen those, and thought about doing the same. Or something similar.

It is a poly-coated nylon, not sil.
It's similar to what the PU-coated 70d Hennessy Hex is made out of, not the "Cheap Blue Tarp" of infamy among car campers (which, I think, is what Ramblinrev is talking about...could be wrong, though). I've got one kicking around in the shed somewhere, from my earlier bikepacking days. I figured I needed an extra tarp for the bike, but my poncho does just fine for that these days...
Also, Outdoor products (Same guys that make the walmart tarp) makes a 9x7 tarp that's relatively cheap ($42) and very durable, though not ultralight. But, as one who doesn't sew, I thought this a good option with great coverage.

That walmart tarp ( I bought one a while back ) is enought to give you a little bit of shade but thats about it.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
