Just a question... Is it normal for people in public camping lands to leave their site with all their stuff in it?
Live, Laugh, Love, if that doesn't work. Load, Aim and Fire, repeat as necessary...
Buy, Try, Learn, Repeat
In what area is this happening?
Trust nobody!
I've left my gear hanging in public sites before, no issues.
Thieves will pay.
The prospectors I've run into have either stopped to pick me up while hitching, or have been met when bushwhacking. I don't see many of them in high-use areas. I don't think much about leaving my gear for an hour or two when camped off the beaten trail.
Trust nobody!
Brute, yes, out west it is very common for people to leave tents, sleeping bags, camp chairs etc. set up during the day when they are out indulging their adventure vice. My climbing adventure rig has been a full size Ford van for over twenty years. I very often left solar panels setup outside when I went off climbing. Between the age of 32 and 42 I probably climbed or bouldered over 200 days a year with the requisite camping trips to be where the action was. I never had my van broken into or any of my stuff bothered. I have been broken into at home while I was gone...
Yes, there will be a hammock in the van come fall....
Sad to see people having their gear stolen. Kind of like stealing someones horse, a hanging offense...

Well this area is called " elifent rock " ( I know I didn't spell that right ) on the Arkansa river out side beuna vista Colorado. I've been prospecting there due to the fact it public land and I'm find plenty of gold
Years ago I had my " Walrus " tent stolen while I was out fishing they left all my other stuff but took the tent. So it does happen
Iv been hanging down on the river, right on top of my gold whole, so I'm not leaving my gear un unattended any way. And sence losing my walrus I only leave my gear alone when I'm way out in the backwoods

This is why you place a water moccasin in the hammock before you leave.
*Rattlesnakes make too much noise.*
Man sized snares work well also
