    Hello from NW Michigan

1st time poster. Happened by this site in search of a better sleeping system. Currently own a small bivy tent "hate it way to small". Have found from other post's all this info is mind boggling. But have kinda narrowed it down to a Bias system with tarp " not sure yet?. Am wanting plenty of rain coverage. Or the Hennessy expedition with hex tarp.

Any help would be awesome on tarp size am leaning toward Bias system. Also with upcoming trip in a month to porcupine mountains there's large amounts of virgin trees" never been logged" so am also worried if I would be needing bigger straps for wide tree's

Thank you in advance for the help

Hello from Ohio. I'm originally from Michigan and still think it's one of the best states to camp with the varied types of camping.
That virgin timber can be massive. I would recommend some amsteel extensions as some insurance.

Welcome from south central MI! I've hung in the porkies but I use all webbing suspension ie: no whoopies so I didn't have a problem. I carry 12' straps.
    Good luck,

I made straps from amsteel blue 3/8. I made one 10 feet long with a loop on each end for a main strap and one 2 feet long with a loop on each end to be used if i need extra length. I use these as is when hanging on trees with strong bark and I put a small length of strapping on the amsteel when hanging on tender trees to protect the bark. I have a giant tree in my back yard that I have hung from with no trouble. Amsteel is super light so I made my entire suspension system out of it. 3/8 for tree straps, 1/8 for whoopie slings, and Even smaller diameter for the Ridgeline and tieouts. Works great, light, fully adjustable, and only two pieces of hardware which are the toggles to connect whoopie slings to tree straps, so it is extremely simple.

Greetings and hello from Traverse City! Great plan for visiting a beautiful area of the Upper Peninsula! I only have experience from reading this forum, but one benefit of going with the Hennessy is that it is a complete system of hammock with bug net, tarp, and basic suspension. Your Bias system would need a bug net to combat the black flies that sometimes inflict havoc on hikers and campers in the Porcupine mountains. Our scout troop is planning a 30 mile hike along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore portion of the North Country Trail in the next few weeks. A really beautiful area! I agree with Sleestac about taking a couple of extensions if you are concerned about tree size...
Good luck and keep us posted on what you decide on!! Let us know about your trip too!!
    Jim
