    Presidential Traverse NH

I am planning a Presidential Traverse in a few weeks - north to south. I am looking at 3 days, 2 nights. Originally I was thinking of camping at The Perch and then Nauman but these are platform tent sites - I am not sure they will be conducive to hammocks.

Has anyone done this hike with a hammock and have some ideas or experience on hammock camping options?

    Thumbs down pres hang

I know your pretty much trapped by AMC to pay for the huts up there. Not only are they expensive but you can't get in them. I think they are about $85.00 a night but you still can't get in there. They own all the land too so you can't camp anywhere up there either. Good luck.

Last summer I was through that area, and was able to hammock at, or near any tent platform in their campsites. Water at the campsites is reliable, as it is at the Huts. Carry enough to get you to the next available one.

It is also very possible to stealth camp, right on the mountainsides, below treeline, most anywhere around there.
Just setup near dark, well off any trail, and be gone near first light.

While almost insanely pricey, there is a luxury factor about carrying a daypack and hut-hopping the whole traverse. Did it about 4 years ago.

Instead of setting up a tent or cooking, I had dinner and breakfast served and could spend that time on the ridge soaking in the views.

    BUT...

If I were determined to hammock, I would probably set up below treeline on the way up Madison, maybe tag that peak, refill water at the hut and return.

Next day, over Adams, Jefferson, and Washington to Monroe & Lake of the clouds hut - refill water and head partially down the Ammonoosuc Ravine trail, bushwhack to hang site.

Next day over Monroe and south. This area has much better footing and less elevation gain that the previous day. Camp at Neuman tentsite or somewhere along the col between Pierce and Jackson.

It's doable, but will probably add near 2000' of additional climbing to the 9000' or so of gain already.

    -----------

http://home.earthlink.net/~ellozy/hut-traverse.html has info on a hut based traverse, but includes useful planning info.

I wish you favorable weather and an enjoyable traverse.

I'm hiking the AT through the whole state of NH, the middle two weeks of August. We're staying at two huts, at least. No real problems with availability, if your schedule is the least bit flexible.

If anyone might be interested in joining us, feel free to shoot me a message.

I expect to be hanging every night except those two, legally.
