I use a box with two X's side-by-side inside it. Works well so far.

in my opinion, if i were sewing two heavy materials together (like webbing to webbing), i would use several bar tacks, same as the climbing industry.
but if a lightweight material like silnylon or 1.1 ripstop was involved (either lightweight to lightweight or lightweight to webbing) i would use the box stitch. ...tim

That is a good point. I was just looking at some quickdraws and they have 11 bar tacks up the length of the webbing.

I used the double "X" box when stitching webbing with a few extra stiches across the top and bottom of the box. After seeing the article on BPL about reinforcement sewing techniques it seemed that the "X" box was going to the best bet.

Thanks for all the input. I think I'll go with the box cross stitch, and then move up a little, and then do it again so it overlaps. This seems the most sturdy to me. Im going to sew it with a standard needle on my moms sewing machines.

As soon as I finish the work on my hammock, I'll have experience and I can post on your questions! (going camping this weekend, and bringing my hammock!) Right now its just you answering me. Thanks.

My machine got tangled when I tried bar tacks on doubled-up webbing. X-boxes were much easier. Maybe a bigger needle would have helped, though.

yep, i read that article & came to the same conclusion, but then i went back to the article & if i remember correctly, in their testing they were sewing two lightweight materials together.
that would be a good thing for us to look further into.

Because you were on thicker material you would have had to adjust the tension, and that is probably why it got tangled. I would love one of those machines that auto tensions.

yeah, me too. i have trouble w/ the tension sometimes. seems to me that sometimes the adjustment knob isn't responding & changing the tension on top.

Make sure it is not the pressure foot adjustment.
