Don't give up on Ebay for sewing machines, Hooch. Lots of good deals there if you're lucky -- but pay attention to the shipping charges. I bought mine there and have been very happy with it so far. I'm working on a Ray-Way quilt at present.

How is that working for you? As I wrote in another post, I could barely sew up my primaloft quilt. I didn't have a walking foot machine so I barely got the thing finished. Is there a walking foot attachment you can buy or do you need a whole new machine like the big industrial machines?

I wish I could help with the walking foot question. This is my first sewing project and first machine... I have a Kenmore, model 16 (older, Japanese-made, heavy and made of metal.)

The hardest part of the quilt kit so far has been sewing the quilt material onto the insulation, but even that has gotten easier as I've gone along (with many fits and starts ). I have been taking my time and am remaining very patient though. It's fun, after all.

I would think you do need a feeder foot(?) to pull the material through. I don't know much more than that. Maybe someone else here can help.

Yeah, go to almost any quilting website and they recommend a walking foot for quilting for even working with silk or silnylon.

I have wanted a walking foot for a bit of time now. It probably would be worth the $40. I just wish I knew where to get one for my machine.

Here's one for 30.00. Supposed to fit 99% of present machines.

So that is a walking foot. I really need to read up on this sewing thing. I like to consider myself kind of a folk tailor.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

If your town is big enough for a sewing machine repair place, they usually have some machines that are unclaimed after the repair work is done, and will sell them for much less. (And at least you will know it works!)
Ask at your local fabric/quilters store, at least one of the staff will know if there is a repair place nearby.
Hope this helps, Betsy (once upon a time a "Cloth World" employee.)

Just noticed that Harbor Freight sells a sewing machine:

    http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=92966

That should handle anything a DIYer could hope to use it for.

    The table is here:

Both would give you a real sweet machine.

That's how I got my "new" 60's machine. It's really nice for lighter-duty stuff, but the gear system for the feed dogs gave out not long after I got it. I need to take it back to the repair guy, but I just haven't had time yet.
