should I wrap the tree more than once?

I slide the buckle to one side but it keeps returning to the middle. Most likely because the tree is a smaller diameter. I’m thinking just wrap around the tree and extra turn for more friction to keep the strap from slipping to the center.

Does that sound about right or is there something else I should do?

Wrapping around the tree an additional time or two should solve the issue.

You could do a double wrap but that means it's more difficult to make a minor height-on-tree adjustment. T'were it me, I'd investigate the problem more. There may be a time when you want to hang with someone else, each of you coming off opposite sides of the tree.

Make sure your straps are oriented so both ends are coming off the same side of the tree. I usually get that wrong the first time and have to pay extra attention to which side the "loop" (Dutch Clip) is coming from. If you are coming off the same side of the tree at both ends, and the strap/clip is slid around so the clip just reaches the line coming off in a straight line from the edge of the tree, it's difficult to imagine what force would pull the strap over.

I bet if you set up again and pay real close attention to having the strap come off in a straight line from the edge of the tree - on both ends, on the same side - and things are a bit snug, the strap won't wander over to center.

That is possible, I will try that. I was thinking the small diameter did not allow much friction to prevent it from returning to the center.

    Thanks

Again, planenut, nothing "moves" unless acted upon by force. When you are in the hammock, the force is more down than over. So have someone else to get in the hammock and see where the sideways force is coming from. If you come off the side of the tree (both sides, same sides) and your strep is snug on the tree with the strap just coming off tangent to the side. I don't see where the sideways "adjustment" is coming from.

Please let us know if you find out.

Both were on the same side of the tree. I played with it a little and it took very slight pressure to get it to slide back to the center again. I’m pretty sure it is just a combination of the smaller diameter tree and the small amount of friction this particular bark provides..

Maybe a different webbing that was wider would help as well.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

I often wrap tree strap twice around tree, with small to medium sized trees. Large trees—once is good. The extra length of strap on a large tree, uses up lots of strap length and there is enough friction with more surface area in contact to keep strap from sliding downwards on trunk.

From what I’ve seen, most hammock campers wrap strap once around tree.

I use a 4' strap and a larks headed whoopie sling, and if the trees are fairly small and close together, I wrap the strap around a few times to take up the slack. I realize I could switch to a marlinspike hitch, but don't like to fiddle too much. Also, instead of a dutch clip or carabiner on the strap, I use an amsteel soft shackle and that helps with placement of the double wrap, IMO.

The double wrap on these particular trees seems to work better for me..
