I was looking at my sewing machine manual and noticed that it could be fit with a double needle. Anyone ever use one of these? Would the stitch produced be useable for hammock use?

Yes, you can use a double needle. I have one(somewhere, darn kids) that I want to use on future hammocks. I would have to use this on my new machine, my old machine is single only, straight line only tank.

If you want a double line of stiching on both sides of the fabric the double needle will not do that. The bobbin side of the stitch is somewhat zigzag from what I understand. (I can use a double but never have.) So you would need to be very aware of which side is going to be visible and whether you want the look you would get. Because the bobbin would be a single thread, if that thread failed you would lose the integrity of both lines of stitching so I am not sure I would look on the seam as double stitched for strength purposes.

Ramblinrev is correct, it does create a zig zag, not 2 seperate stright lines of stitches. For reference, flip over the bottom hem of most T-Shirts and you will see an example of what double needle work looks like.
Well, that's right about the zigzag on the bottom of the stitch but I still like the look of the twin-needle stitch. As long as you know which side won't be seen I don't see the problem. However, using your t-shirt as an example isn't really accurate. Most clothing is done with a serger which does an overlock stitch and (usually) cuts the seam allowance at the same time. Oh dear God how did I know that?
