The National Weather Service says we got over two inches of rain yesterday. I knew it was raining hard where I was but apparently it was more widespread than I thought.
I've been thinking about the setup I had out back and I began to realize that there was some moisture at each end of the hammock. I had drip loops and the ends were under the tarp but some water appears to have wicked in anyway.
How much overhand do y'all use past the edge of the hammock in order to stay dry? Is there some moisture transfer regardless? Still trying to figure all this out before it really matters and I can't just get up and go inside if I was wrong. :-)

My wife said "But it's raining!" too, the first few times. Now, she says "Hey, it's raining, you going outside?"
90% of the time my answer is "YES!!!!!" The other 10% is: zooom, back door slamming.

I sleep in my backyard 3 or 4 days a week. My wife knows I'm a little strange though....

I wish it would rain here, you better believe I'd be out there in it.

Well I ws hoping for rain tonight but its not going to happen. Dang it. I'm glad you got the chance to enjoy hammocking in the rain though!

It depends on your suspension. This summer I hung at my inlaws with one hammock end wrapped around a pole where the downspout used to be. It rained each day we were there and at times was so heavy that the water poured from the pole straight down my web bing straps like a canal.

But the water stopped at my water break and never reached my hammock.

This is why I have switched my suspension to have a short loop on the ends of my hammock and a hardware break between that and the tree webbing. As long as the short loops and break are covered under the hammock tarp you should be fine.

Webbing or rope that runs continuously from tree/anchor to hammock runs the risk of wicking moisture.

Right now I have my whoopie slings larksheaded directly to the hammock. Maybe I should do a soft shackle on the hammock, then a ring, then the sling. Thoughts?

I have not found any need for metal hardware in my system. I was out in some rather intense rains last night at Paris Mountain and the rain came to my bury in the whoopie and ran down the tail. No extra drip protection needed. YMMV.

That's so nice. A quite after noon rain. Rain Cool rain catcher. Last month I was out in my HH when I awoke at 3am-ish to thunder. Not the distant rolling rumble kind but the ear splitting kind. It lasted about a hour before I could get back to sleep.

A trick I sometimes use ...

....for water dripping, is to take one of those little plastic thingies that come with a loaf of bread, and simply snap it on the suspension line before it reaches the hammock! Works pretty well, has no weight at all, is free, and come in all colors and sizes! I even filed one down to a point to drip into a collector pan, but that is not necessary, even.

SO when you toss the bread bag, SAVE the plastic closures!
