I need to make three Orange Hammocks. Please advise.

I am going to burning man this year and one always need to contribute to the Burning man community, as that’s what makes BM so special, everyone gives. My gift will be to make three hammocks to my theme camp called “More Carrots” which will be the only Farmers Market in the desert of Nevada.

Now I never made a hammock before and would love some advice from my Hammock forum community on how to make three inexpensive yet durable orange color hammocks to reflect on the theme. My vision ideally was to make hammocks look like carrots but that will be for another time. Your advice is dear to me. Thank you.

I assume you're not looking for especially light materials; I think this will be cheaper and more durable than the crinkle taffeta.

If you can't find orange ripstop (check Seattle Fabrics), you could use green and have green peas or green beans.

The tablecloth hammocks are the absolute cheapest way to go. Might I suggest that you purchase some orange Amsteel Blue 7/64" for whoopie slings from maybe http://www.reddenmarine.com and orange webbing from http://www.strapworks.com for your tree straps.

Then again, there are no trees at Burning Man. I am not sure what suspension to recommend, though the orange straps with buckles may be the most versatile in a non-tree situation.

DIYGearSupply.com has some cheap fabrics too, plus he has some tablecloth blanks as well - good guy, awesome products, ships fast and he has some DIY project templates you could use to build your carrots... Well, maybe not carrots, but definitely some hammocks - enjoy your time at BM! I sooo want to go - maybe one of these days

For orange color, there are a number of fabric choices.

At Outdoor Wilderness Fabrics, they have 1.9 oz/sq yard orange ripstop (under "Breathable Ripstop").

Seattle Fabrics has 200 denier (~3.5 oz/sq yard) orange Oxford fabric.

efabricsupplier has a 70 denier (1.9 oz/sq yard) orange taffeta fabric (though, since it says that this is "water repellent", you may want to ask if it is breathable before purchase; if it's not, pass on it).

There're more out there, I'm sure. You'll want something in the 70d (1.9 oz) or greater range, and I recommend the Knotty gathered-end hammock design. It's simple, no-frills, and easy to make. It'll take you maybe an hour of actual measuring, cutting, and sewing to make one of these. Suspension can be whoopie slings, adjustable webbing, or even just plain old line.

Anyway, that's my recommendation.

This three-person hammock stand comes directly from a previous Burning Man. It works great on that flat, desert scene.

You can put this stand together for less than $50. Throw a couple of tarps over for shade and you're all set.
