    looking to try hammock camping

Hey everyone, I have been reading this site for weeks. Lots of great info and passionate folks here. Thanks for having me, can i ask a question?

I am wanting to buy my first camping hammock soon, and am wondering if a hammock stand i have for my spreader style hammock will work for hanging in the backyard? http://hatterashammocks.com/detail.php?id=L-STBRTX
it is 15 feet long and say it accommodates hammocks 13 foot with chains.

Welcome and that stand should be perfect for you if it can fit up to 15'.

    OK I've got that stand

and I'll state my opinion. It will work with some hammocks better than others. As an example it worked fine with my HH Backpacker Asym and worked ok with my GrizzBridge but didn't do so well with a Blackbird (or for that matter a Dangerbird) or Traveler. With the Blackbird to get the 30 degree hang angle I ended up with the bottom of the hammock on the horizontal bar, essentially I was on the ground.
With the Hennessey I pulled the suspension as tight as I could (between trees) on this stand and it was not a problem having clearance below.
For me, to use this stand successfully with a BlackBird (and the like) I added extensions that elevated the attachment points almost 3 feet higher. YMMV.

What MedicineMan said, but I have an additional info. There are two types of these stands sold, one is about 40" high and the other is a little bit higher, maybe 45". The link you provide doesn't give a height, so guessing it's the low one. It won't work with most camping hammock, you'll be bouncing off the bottom bar. The higher one works better, but you still have to pull the hammock tighter than you would normally, so may or may not work for you. I've had both, had to get rid of the lower one and then got the higher one. I know I won't be as comfortable as when hanging between two trees, but at least I can sleep in my hammock no matter where I'm at when I'm not backpacking.
