The last week of June we made our annual trek to Westport for maintenance (and for fun). Relatives have property there that has several 1940s, 1950s fishing cottages on the shore of the Upper Rideau Lake. Beautiful area and great people!
We have been going up every year in the early/mid summer to help out and to enjoy the outdoors. This year we stayed in the white cottage for a few days, then moved our belongings to the red cottage. We never slept in the red - opting instead to set up our hammocks in a small grove of cedar trees close to the water's edge.
We were awakened the first night by swarms of mosquitos trying to attack us.
The next day we sprayed our hammocks with permethrin - much quieter sleeping! One night we heard noisy racoons - sounded like Tasmanian Devils - arguing among themselves on the way to the water, right beside us. Another night I heard large branches being broken up the hillside very early in the morning - bear? sasquatch? I couldn't see much even with the full moon. . .
