Thanks, Ewker, I have a membership request pending right now. I appreciate the idea and pointing me in the right direction!

I have given stuff away and got other stuff thru it. One thing you cannot do is to sell what you get for free.

Even though I have used the sewing machine a few times I still can't sew a straight line the thread is all over the place

But you can try, you'll get the hang of it eventually! Thanx again!

There is also a lexington cheap cycle yahoo group. I have seen a couple of sewing machines in there before.

I don't like singers. I hate the way you have to set tension on the bobbin, but it will work.

That's all I need right now: something that will work. I'l get what I really want later on if I show any aptitude for DIY.

My 1958-ish Singer 500 has a horizontal bobbin with no bobbin case. The tension is set with a screw on the ring that goes around where the botton sits. I wouldn't rule out the older ones. It just sewn through 4 layers of mom90 with some nanoseeum without missing a beat.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

I have two older and one new machine. For the type of work HE just mentioned, you cannot beat the older machines. Sure they are not as automated as the newer machines, but for sewing straight stitches thru multiple layers of fabric, nothing works better. Those in the 35 - 40 yr old range also do a much better job of handling knits without catching the fabric threads (because that was when polyester knit fabric became very popular because you don't have to iron it !!!! )

It is the screw that I hate.
