    Hammock material

What material do HF people recommend to make a hammock if weight is not an issue?

    My preference is polyester taffeta.

I only know my 1.9 ripstop works fine although I see folks make hammocks from the tablecloth crinkle taffeta.

It's pretty individual and also depends a lot on your weight.

I'm about 180# and my all around favorite is the 1.4 oz ripstop that DIYgearsupply sells. Gives some but not too much. Heavier folks might prefer heavier material. Some like taffeta.

There's a stretch and a feel to each kind and weight.

That seemed an odd weight to my recollection, so I went to the web page. And there it is. But, that reminded me that some here expressed real pleasure in hammocks they had made with the 2.8oz plain weave nylon DIYGEARSUPPLY sells. Yes, quite heavy compared to 1.1oz. But then came the popularity of 2.6oz "crinkle" polyester less than a year later, also sold there, hardly lighter.

Some commercial makers make double layer hammocks where different fabric is used for the interior layer, against the body, than the outer layer, which has other requirements.

This has been the craze lately: http://www.tableclothsfactory.com/ta...Sashes-s/1.htm Scroll down to the bottom where you see crinkle taffeta, pick your length, width and color. Whip the ends, add suspension and ridgeline, and presto, you have yourself a hammock.

The jury is still torn on width. Some like them 60" wide and some like them 90" wide. I love my 90 but it's not for everyone.

I'm a car/motorcycle camper, so I also don't worry about weight, and instead select for comfort, availability, and price. I used a bedsheet (woven, not knit) on one of my bridge hammocks and it is very comfortable, stretches just a bit, cheap, and available everywhere.

I know. He used to sell it as 1.5 but I believe it's the same stuff.

I have some of both flavors and it sure looks the same to me. Didn't bother to weigh it...

I also have both and they look a bit different to me. The 1.4 is a bit lighter in color (could just be a different dye lot). The current description says 40d and if I remember correctly, the 1.5 was described as 30d x 70d.

However, they both serve the same purpose for me. My body weight probably varies more than the range of these fabrics, if indeed they are different.

Maybe the lighter dye weighs less...
