I am always interested in learning what local edibles there are and how to prepare them.

Okay, since I've gotten such a positive response I'm going to do this a little backwards because its against the rules to harvest anything within a state park. I'm going to have a table set up with a selection of goodies. No meats - hunting and fishing is easy. This is just going to be the stuff I will be seeing on the hike. I don't know everything that is going to be on the table because I don't know off the top of my head everything that's on the trails out there. But I'll find us a good selection and make it into something tasty.

I will say, not everything that I'm going to be pointing out is going to be in season. Pokeweed is a spring veggie. As is lamb's quarters. Chickweed can be harvested in any cool months so I will probably see it around somewhere. Morels will grow in that area, but it is the wrong time of the year. Puffball and chicken of the woods also should be in that area. You've got burdock and cattails- but it will be the wrong time of the year for the female tails and the male tails will have already blown away - so it'll only be time for the roots. I might be able to do something with some acorns. I'll do some experimenting and see if I come up with something edible.

PS, also planning on printing up recipes that I use and preparations. Just if y'all could let me know a rough guess of how many to expect then I'll print up a few extras. I added a column in the spreadsheet for folks to say yes they're coming and how many to expect.

I see she added a column to the spreadsheet for people going on the wild foods hike -- if you're already on there and interested in going, please edit your line to count yourself in -- that way we get a good headcount for participants

Good reminder on the spreadsheet! I have added a summation field so that if you put a number hiking instead of text there will be a running count of those hiking.

Also for those attending who have not listed themselves yet AND to see what the interest level is for an Amsteel line group buy.

I am adding my name to the spreadsheet and making plans to attend. I will bring a cajun pirogue, and portable hammock stands if needed. Also, following the firewood question, I can bring wood, but it will be mesquite. Will that be OK? (About 4 or 5 armfuls...)

    Thanks,

Just a little update. I had put in a request to the state park folks to see if they knew anybody in the area who would let me do a little harvesting so we could have a sampling of things that we're going to see. Well, I just got the answer back and its a No. So, I'm in the process of looking up where I can go or who I need to bother in order to be able to harvest a good variety of things.

I still don't know which trail I'm going to take when we get there. There's this one...

Says 3 miles and its good little hike, but there's the other one that goes to the primitive campsites that has even more biodiversity.

    PDF Map of the park

Also, I will say for all you AT guys and speed demons that hike 20+ miles a day, I'm going to be going at a snail's pace pointing interesting things all over the place and talking about them. We're taking our time and meandering. Not covering ground.
