Last year I happened to need to be in Atlanta before and after the event, so I drove up with Coffee to keep me awake. Except he snoozed out when we found the Grateful Dead channel on Sirius. About 6 hours driving time, but Atlanta is a good place to hit for cheaper tickets.

Smaller places in driving distance with airports include Blacksburg VA
    and Knoxville TN.

I'm eyeing this too seeing if I could make it work. I need to be in Baltimore Jan 27 (the Tuesday following)...

I'd love to do this as well, but it's about 9 hours by car for me. Can't make that happen.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Ok, I feel like a total *** for even having to ask this (considering what I just finished), but if I am able to make this (depends on whatever mystery job I end up...that I don't have yet), where do you park and how far from that parking area to Wise Shelter? Only asking so if I freeze my arse off (seeing as how I AM the world's coldest sleeper), I can retreat to my vehicle.

Certain - people generally park near the entrance to the campground in Grayson Highlands State Park in an overflow parking area - from that spot its about 1 mile to the Wise shelter on a very flat trail. If you want a ride down I live just north of you in Greene County and I am willing to give you space in the car.

Yeah it is really chill. Think unpaved creeper trail chill. It comes out just north either just north of the shelter where you see the sign to showers and stuff or on the trail that is just infront of the shelter.

What can I say. I'll blame my hike for that one. I was only off the trail a week at the campout last year. Hard to think it has almost been a year already. Unfortunatly no sign of another long hike in the immedate future.

    I'll second it, if necessary.
