Trying to get silnylon in the UK is a nightmare wo should I buy ripstop nylon and silicone seal it myself or is there another material I could use

Have you tried Profabrics? They usually have it

Extremtextil also sell many top quality fabrics.


As an alternative, you can use PU coated nylon or polyester which will also be much cheaper and just as light.

Also when I read 1.2oz material is that the weight per amount of area of material as in the uk I can only find grams

If my calculations is right that fabric is 70g/m^2, or 2.06oz/square yard.

I am going to make a tarp but was also going to make a hammock out of a different material but again having problems with the material strenght.

That silnylon was the one I was thinking of and yes, its strong enough. its around 2 oz/sqyd.
My main user DIY tarp is PU coated ripstop nylon which was made from 1.5oz. The silicon impregnation actually increases the tear strength-its good.

I use oz/sq yd because that's what I have picked up from here and its become ingrained. I convert to g/sqm when shopping in the UK.

To help; weights are usually listed per linear unit length which means that the entire width is weighed and this is usually larger than a meter.
Also; US weights are before being coateed/impregnated and so will weigh more than they are listed. Our weights are listed as finished weights so making a direct comparison between US and UK fabric weights is part guess work.

For the hammock, I recommend a ripstop nylon or polyester.
My favourite hammocks are DIY and made from Pertex 4(Skylon is almost identical). It's a really hardwearing, water resistant and snowproof but highly breathable fabric and feels brilliant in use.

Fabrics'n'stuff have a great range of fabrics too, often a little cheaper (but don't carry silnylon). They have some very high quality parachute nylon which are also very suitable and lighter and cheaper than the Pertex.

As a guide, I have a ripstop nylon hammock from fabrics n stuff's range that I made from 38g/sqm stuff. Its a double layer and is plenty strong enough too.
