DIY UQ Complete! It's XXL Rated.

Okay, my turn. KMart pillow down. Full length, Full figured and Beautiful, If I do say so myself.

I tend to dive into things I have an idea I can do, and figure things out as I go. I figured out a few things alright. Making a down UQ isn't hard, but it isn't easy either. (But boy the next one will be easier and there will be less head scratching! )

    Dimensions 78" x 48". I used Catsplat's calculator to guide me.

HUGE PROPS TO CATSPLAT! (And all others who came before me.)

I did deviate somewhat but not much. I decided to make 12 longitudinal channels which gave me 4" on top and 5" for the bottom. I cut 3" width strips of no-seeum to give me approximately 2+" of loft, marked out with chalk pencil, and sewed in the baffles.

I had 2" grosgrain around, so that's what I used. I did channels full length and full width for the shock cord. (minus an inch or so on each end)

Double stitched the side channels for the heck of it.

Milo Thermopolis helped me get the shock cord through the channels. Well, he psychically helped me.

And Hokey Smokes Batman, we have Underquilt!

I used two full pillows in this beast, meaning a full 32oz of whatever it is. I think the whole things weighs about 40oz. (Haven't weighed it yet.)

Oooh, I totally misremembered there! I used 2 pillows plus about 6 oz from another and the whole thing weighs 50 oz with stuff sack...

I'll evaluate what I will do differently next time and get back to you. And, btw, off the top of my head, I think it cost less than $50 to make.

Here's a brief breakdown as to estimated cost. I think all materials came from diygearsupply.com except maybe the grosgrain and the S biners.

    Approximately:

2.2yds each of Olive Green and Gray 1.1 calendared seconds - $15
    1.5 yd of no-seeum - $5
    21' of 1/8" shock cord and 8' of 3/32" - $7
    20' of 2" grosgrain - $2
    6 cord locks - $1.50
    2 'S' biners - $3
    2 $9 pillows - $18

For a grand total guesstimation before shipping and tax of about $51.50, so maybe $60 or so.

When does fall get here? IT'S SO FLUFFY!!!

looks great; really like the colors. Yes, hurry up fall--a drop in the temps cannot get here soon enough, IMO. Let us know how it works for you.

    Freakin beautiful!

Looks fantastic. Being a noob with a thread injecter your build gives me hope, and great expectations. My helper is much smaller but I hope he can get through those channels better than I. Awesome Job. The warmth radiates.

Wow, Randy that is a beautiful job. I'm not sure which pictures I found most entertaining, the beautiful canine assistant or the jumbo wooden tailor's pins. Neat to see such fantastic work from a relative of my budget sewing machine. Thanks for including some cost data. Was the rip stop nylon included in the cost?

Sorry, but after drooling over all the great pictures again, I just have to say that Milo is going to be one hot dog this winter....
