What do you do with shoes and other bulky items when it rains?

If it is raining I'm NOT content with sticking my shoes outside of the tent... they could be washed away when I sleep or just plain get soaked and dirty.

I was thinking that in a pinch you can hang them from the ridge line but you don't want to do this if they're dirty or already wet.

Hanging them BELOW the hammock but suspended above the ground might work but my hammock (Blackbird) doesn't have any mount points for a caribiner.

I guess I could run a line UNDER the hammock which is probably the safest bet.

Thoughts?

When I choose a hammock site, yes choose the site not just look for two trees, I also look for uneven ground. I try to get a spot where just below my hammock is a "bubble" of earth, or a log, or something. This allows me a place to set my shoes, or use as a cook surface in the AM. In all the rains I have experienced, I have never seen some that would wash away shoes on flat ground (except in campgrounds where the dirt is so compact it is like concrete but i don't camp in those) let alone a few inches higher.

But a log/stump next to the hammock is perfect!

for me everything is kept up off the ground hanging from hammock suspension at all times. regardless of the weather. my reason is skunks, but that's another story.

I use an eno underbelly for my shoes.

I just tie the laces together and hang them over the head end of the hammock so they are under the tarp.

I had a rain like that come down on me once. It wasn't in the night, I was still up grilling my dogs. Everything that was'nt under the tarp got soaked, and in a few minutes time everything that was would have gotten as well - when the ground underneath the hammock turned into a stream. But I had hung everything from a rope I ran under the tarp, almost like a ridge line except it didn't support the tarp. So nothing that was essential got wet, even though it was a torrential rain of holy books' proportions.

An extra diddy bag always works nice just for shoes or boot or crocs. But I prefer a compactor bag to slide my pack and boots in then everything is tidy and dry!

I have stacked rocks/sticks up in a little platform and set my stuff on there... This is where two trash bags in your pack will come in handy... The whole pa ks gets shoved in one... And shoes get placed in the other... I have also hung from tarp ridgeline...
