    G-Nuts' Poncho Liner UQ Project

Hey Folks... I just finished my Ponch Liner Under Quilt project and I thought I'd share it with you.

I picked up an after-market poncho liner at my local military surplus store and I like it over the military "issue" version for two reasons: 1. It is slightly fluffier and thus affords a small increase in warmth; and 2. Unlike the "issue" poncho liners that I am familiar with, it is a true rectangle and things square up better when you fold it before sewing, etc.

As you can see from the photos, the opening in the middle is large enough to fit a 3 oz reflectix pad (scored at the same surplus store I purchased the poncho liner from).

I sewed channels along both of the short ends to accommodate the shock cord and cord locks. I haven't chosen yet to sew channels along the long ends and have instead opted to go with loops and prusik knots to keep the quilt taut (as you can see, I do my sewing the old fashioned way and I will definitely take a break before I even think about sewing those...lol).

All in all an easy project!

Oh yeah...and it comes in at 2 lbs including cord, rope, etc. My pack is lighter than that; however, until I get a little more "mad cash" this will have to do. Cheers!

Good looking job G-nut. That insert will come in handy. Look into a Pellon product called insulfleece as an insert also. It is a perforated mylar with a fleece coating on both sides. Most fabric stores and some WM carry it. Being perforated it doesn't act as a vapor barrier and it adds quite a few degrees to the PLUQ.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

Thanks for the tip! I was wondering how I might deal with clamminess...appreciate the vector! G-Nut

+1. One layer of InsulFleece (olddog was the one to turn me on to it) gave me an extra ~10 to 15 degrees of comfort range. Note that it isn't very compressible or light compared to some of the other options out there (but, then again, neither is a poncho liner).

Hope you enjoy your new insulation!

Nice job on the sewing, even if it is old fashion.

I might try making one of these for the wife and son before the fall sprawl. How wide and long is it?

I wish I could sew. This looks like a perfect setup for a night that needs a buffer but not an actual UQ.
